A Non – Governmental Organisation (NGO) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), known as the Kabash Love Foundation yesterday stated that vulnerable children found in the North – Eastern part of the country which is plagued currently by the Boko Haram insurgency are often recruited as child Soilders.
In a statement signed and released in Abuja by its President Katura Adams and Secretary Joseph Chonkea said that if the children in the insurgent areas are not occupied with School and vocational skills they stand a chance to be recruited by the deadly group and used as weapons against the society.
“According to the world bank about 12 billion out of world’s 6.3 billion people are aged between 10 and 19. Statistics shows that as many as 300,000 child soldiers are active in conflicts around the world.
“40 per cent of armed forces including national armies, militias, gangs, terrorist organisation and resistance forces use children.
“The Boko Haram group has used children, mostly girls for suicide bombings in the various northern parts of the country and this is alarming because these children have the potentials to em better the society, “it said.
The NGO further called on President Muhammadu Buhari to not only ensure that security is guaranteed in the insurgent areas but also come up with programmes that will engage children meaningfully giving the massive destruction that has rocked the region.
“The Federal Government can put programmes in place that will engage these children already displaced in the IDP camps with vocations and skills that will not only embetter themselves and their families but provide peace and prosperity for the society at large, “the statement said.
